Exploring the Almopia Area in Central Macedonia

Mount Jena, from Milia

The region of ancient Almopia constitutes a homonymous province of the Pella regional unit and includes the unified Municipality of Almopia with its seat in Aridaia. It is the largest municipality in terms of area in the Pella regional unit and extends geographically westward from the borders of the regional unit with Florina to the boundaries of the Kilkis regional unit to the east. The western border of Almopia is the Kaimaktsalan ski resort (Voras).

Varathro Cave is open for tourism, Bear Cave holds paleontological significance, and Partisans Cave is archaeologically rich. The park is a hub for geology, paleontology, and archaeology enthusiasts. Religious Monuments

  • In the spa town, you’ll find the chapel of Saint Panteleimon, which welcomes many visitors and bathers every year as it is considered a healer and protector of healing.
  • About three kilometers from the Spa Town, in Upper Loutraki, lies the church of Saint John the Baptist with rich frescoes. It is built on Mount Isia Pefka at an altitude of about 600 meters.
  • Near Loutra Loutrakiou, in Promachoi, is the women’s monastery of Saint Hilarion in an idyllic location. The monastery was founded by Saint Hilarion, who served as bishop of Moglenoi during the 18th century, as the province of Almopia was formerly called. The monastery suffered great destruction from the Turks, and for many years it remained inactive. Today, the monastery is operational, and maintenance work is being carried out.
  • On the eastern side of Almopia, one encounters the Monastery of Archangel Michael, about 40 kilometers west of Loutraki. In addition to the unique natural landscape, visitors can admire rare frescoes, painted at the end of the 18th century, featuring unprecedented representations and folk artistry.

Nature paths

  • Black Forest: The Black Forest extends on the eastern slopes of Voras towards the ski center. Visitors can follow two routes. The first route is from the village of Orma, and the second from the village of Megaplatanos.
  • Promachoi Forest: Starting from the local community of Promachoi and following a route through forest roads, visitors to the area can reach the Promachoi Forest, with its unique five-needle pine, a species unique in Europe, protected by the Ramsar Convention.
  • Platsa – Pinovo: Following the central forest road and passing through forest areas, the visitor reaches the peak “Pinovo”, with rich flora and fauna. There are two enormous cannons from World War I.
  • Kali Pedina Plateau: In Upper Loutraki, at an altitude of 2000 meters, lies the Kali Pedina Plateau (Dobro-Pole). It is a natural basin with many small lakes of unique beauty, lush vegetation, and monuments to the fallen. It is one of the four destinations for mountain biking.
