Kalamas (Thyamis) River

The Kalamas River, also known by its ancient name Thyamis, flows through the scenic Epirus region of Northwestern Greece, spanning approximately 115 kilometers from its source near Mount Mavrovouni to its delta at the Ionian Sea near Igoumenitsa.

While it is not widely known for kayaking and rafting, the river offers serene canoeing opportunities, especially along its lower stretches, where gentle currents create a peaceful environment for paddlers. The river’s banks are perfect for hiking, with numerous trails winding through lush forests, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and gorges.

At its mouth, the Kalamas Delta forms a significant wetland, home to a diverse range of wildlife, including many rare and migratory bird species. This area, which includes the Drepano Lagoon, serves as a gateway for birdwatching enthusiasts and fishing, drawing nature lovers to its rich habitats.

However, this ecosystem faces challenges from pollution, mainly due to agricultural runoff, untreated waste, and industrial discharge upstream. These pollutants threaten the health of the river’s flora and fauna, impacting both the natural environment and local communities.
