Achilleio: A seaside village of Magnesia

In close proximity to both Volos and Lamia, Achilleio is a seaside village of Magnesia in a secluded, picturesque spot on the Gulf of Pteleos.

Homerian traditions place the renowned hero Achilles reigning over the Myrmidons of Phthia, in an area that today we would identify with southeastern Thessaly and northeastern Phthiotis—precisely where Achilleio is now located. Homerian stories about Achilles and his Myrmidons cannot be confirmed by modern research, but the discovery of sarcophagus-shaped tombs at the site known today to locals as “Xirorachi” supports the view that the area was inhabited in antiquity.

Achilleio captivates visitors with its idyllic location, combining the lush nature of Magnesia with the azure, crystal-clear waters of the Pagasetic Gulf, along with a particularly picturesque, secluded cove forming a natural small harbor.

The sandy beach of Agios Dimitrios is particularly popular, and there are plenty of opportunities for those who love fishing. Excursionists relax by the sea for coffee, ouzo, tsipouro, and seafood snacks by the waves.

Many sailing boats anchor in Achilleio in the summers, while there is also traffic to and from the islands of the Northern Sporades, relieving the neighboring—and larger in size—port of Glyfa. You can rent a boat here to explore the bay and reach Trikeri, at the end of Pagasitikos Bay, where you can enjoy a delicious seafood meal.

Another wonderful experience is to take a morning boat for a full day excursion to Skiathos. Along the way there is fun with music and dances and the climax is with a stop for diving in the middle of the bay of Pteleos!

Achilleion, as seen from the Castle of Pteleos, on the top of a hill. :)
