The Tavropos River, also known as the Megdovas River, is a beautiful waterway flowing through the mountainous landscapes of Central Greece. Originating from the Agrafa Mountains in the regional unit of Evrytania, the river stretches for about 78 kilometers, winding through gorges, valleys, and lush forests before flowing into Lake Kremasta.
The Tavropos River is dammed near the village of Morfovouni to create Lake Plastira (also known as Lake Tavropos), an artificial reservoir in the regional unit of Karditsa. This lake, which serves as a crucial water supply, irrigation source, and hydroelectric power provider, controls the flow of the river downstream. Surrounded by rolling hills and forests, Lake Plastira is a popular destination for water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding.
After leaving Lake Plastira, the Tavropos River continues its journey and flows into Lake Kremasta, Greece’s largest artificial lake, formed by the damming of the Achelous River.
The Tavropos River valley offers excellent opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring scenic trails. The nearby Stone Bridge of Megdovas is a historical landmark that adds charm to the region, perfect for photography and sightseeing.
